A painting of a woman thinking about her teeth.

Has it been a while since your last dental appointment? Maybe you are new to the Hampstead or Surf City area and need a new provider, or perhaps you’re just looking for a dentist who listens to your needs.

No matter the reason, we know that walking into a new office can be nerve-wracking. At The Dental Lounge, we do things differently. We want you to feel prepared, comfortable, and heard from the moment you walk through our doors.

Here is exactly what you can expect during your first visit with Dr. Amanda Gill.

The Two Types of Patient Visits

Generally, new patient appointments fall into one of two categories:

  1. Limited Exams: For when you have one specific problem (like a toothache).

  2. Comprehensive Exams: For when you want to establish long-term care and wellness.

Let’s explore which one is right for you.

Option 1: The "Limited Exam" (Problem-Focused)

I only have one specific concern right now.”

Sometimes, you just need an answer. You might have a nagging toothache, a broken crown, or you might be interested in a specific solution like a sleep apnea appliance or cosmetic teeth whitening.

If you come in to address a single issue, we will schedule you for a Limited Examination.

  • The Process: To diagnose the issue (like pain or a cavity), our dental assistant will typically take a specific X-ray of that area first. This might be a single image or a full panoramic view.

  • Minimizing X-Rays: If you have recently seen another dentist in the Jacksonville or Wilmington area, we encourage you to request your records ahead of time. We prefer to minimize X-rays whenever possible!

  • The Consult: Dr. Gill will review your history and the images, then conduct a focused clinical exam. You will work together to decide the best way to solve that specific problem so you can get back to your life pain-free.

Many patients start here and then choose to establish us as their regular family dentist once their immediate issue is resolved.

Option 2: The "New Patient Experience" (Comprehensive Care)

I want a fresh start and a dentist I can trust for the long haul.”

This is the most common first visit. It is designed to look at the "whole you"—not just your teeth, but your overall health and wellness.

Step 1: Information Gathering

Just like a limited exam, we will start by gathering your health history and any past records. We want to know your story.

Step 2: Digital Imaging

Our hygienist or assistant will take the necessary digital images. This usually includes a "Full Mouth Series" and a panoramic X-ray to give us a complete roadmap of your oral health. We may also take intraoral photos (pictures of your teeth) so we can show you exactly what we see.

Step 3: Periodontal (Gum) Health

Our hygienist will perform a gentle evaluation of your gums and the tissues that support your teeth. This is crucial for catching things like gum disease early.

Step 4: The Comprehensive Exam with Dr. Gill

Dr. Gill will complete a thorough comprehensive examination. This goes beyond checking for cavities. It includes:

  • A head and neck exam.

  • An evaluation of your tongue and soft tissues.

  • A sleep and airway assessment (something many dentists miss!).

Step 5: The Conversation

This is the "Lounge" difference. We sit down and talk. Do you have dental anxiety? Are you looking to brighten your smile? We discuss your goals and create a plan together.

You will leave with a clear Treatment Plan—whether that includes cleanings, restorations, or just a clean bill of health—and the opportunity to ask questions about insurance, financing, or timing.
